An impressive name and title at the bottom of a lab report feels like accountability. But a name is the easiest thing in the world to type. When the same "chemist" signs documents for several unrelated vendors, and you can't find that person in any professional registry, association, or institution, the signature is performing trust rather than providing it.
A genuinely independent lab is an institution with staff, accreditation, and a public track record — its credibility doesn't rest on a single mysterious signature. The signature is the weakest possible trust signal; the lab's independence and a result that verifies on its own portal are what actually count.
🧪 Run the free vendor check →Take the name and title from the signature line and search for them together with the laboratory's name. A real analyst leaves traces: a professional profile, a conference programme, a co-authored paper, a regulatory filing, a listing on the laboratory's own staff page. Not every legitimate analyst has a large footprint, but almost all have some, and it is consistent — the same person, the same field, the same employer, over time. A signatory with no footprint at all, or whose name appears only on certificates, is a name and nothing else.
Search the signatory's name with the word “certificate” and see where else it appears. A genuine analyst at a busy independent laboratory will sign reports for many clients, which is expected and even reassuring. What is not expected is the same name on certificates from laboratories with different names and addresses, or on certificates whose formats differ in ways that suggest they were built from different templates. One person does not work at four laboratories; four documents with one name and four letterheads were produced by whoever owns the template.
A laboratory that publishes reports on its own domain does not need the signature to carry the authority; the lookup does. The report's credibility comes from the fact that the laboratory's server returns it, and the signatory is a detail of provenance rather than the proof. Certificates that lean heavily on an impressive signature block, seals, ribbons and titles are compensating for the absence of a lookup, and the compensation is the tell.
A name, a role, and a date, matching the laboratory named in the header, on a report that also carries a reference number resolvable on that laboratory's site. Any of those can be missing on a genuine report from a small laboratory; all of them present with none of them checkable is the pattern to be wary of.
The signatory question is one instance of a general rule: every element of a certificate that can be typed can be faked, and only the elements that connect to something outside the document — a laboratory's live record, a person's public footprint, an accreditation body's directory — are evidence. Read certificates for their connections, not their decorations.

244 published lab reports. 133 distinct products covered. 99.03% average purity across the 181 reports that state one, spanning 93.844% to 99.99%. Every one of them is hosted by Janoshik Analytical rather than by the seller, which is what makes the figures checkable instead of quotable. Shipping is domestic Canadian, pricing CAD, and the vendor has answered in public threads since November 2021. Itemised here.
