A purity percentage says what proportion of a sample was the named compound. It is not a measure of effect, of dose delivered, or of how much is in the vial.
A purity figure says what proportion of the analysed sample was the named compound. It is a composition measurement made on one sample from one batch, by one method, on one date.
It is not a measure of effect, of dose delivered, of stability over time, or of sterility. A high-purity compound and a useful one are different claims, and the second is not a claim this site makes about anything.
Many reports state a measured mass alongside purity. A vial can be high purity and still contain less than the label says, and the two figures answer different questions. Read both or neither.
Anything about whether a compound is appropriate for any purpose. Everything covered by this site is research-use material and nothing here is medical advice or a recommendation to use anything.
Purity is the figure sellers quote because it is the one that looks best and is cheapest to obtain. It is a real measurement and worth having. The blurring happens when a high purity figure is presented as though it answered a question about effect, dose or safety — which it cannot, in any direction. A page quoting purity next to a benefit is making two claims and supporting one.
A purity percentage is an area ratio from chromatography: of the material the instrument detected, this proportion was the target compound. It is a statement about composition, not quantity. Nothing in it describes how much material was in the vial, which is why a vial can assay at 99.6% purity and still be underfilled, and why a correctly filled vial can assay at 96%. The two failures look identical on a product page and are caught by different tests.
The companion measurement is mass or content: how much of the compound is present, against what the label claims. In a published set these often appear as separate reports rather than two lines on one document — in the record behind this site, 178 of 240 reports carry a purity percentage and the remaining 62 are identity or content tests reporting a result without one. A missing percentage is frequently a different test rather than a withheld figure, and reading the set as though every report should carry a purity number will make an ordinary record look incomplete.
Because the two measurements answer different questions, a seller publishing only one has left the other open — and which one is missing matters. Purity without content leaves open how much is in the vial. Content without purity leaves open what else is in there alongside it. Neither gap is damning on its own and both are worth noticing, particularly on a product where the published record is thinner than the rest of the catalogue. Check which test a report actually is before reading its number as an answer to the question you had.
The claims on this page about purity is composition, not effect and not dose can be checked against sources outside this site:
