A reference standard is the known material a measurement is compared against. Without one a figure is a reading rather than a measurement, and cross-lab comparison breaks.
An instrument does not read a result off a sample the way a ruler reads a length. It produces a signal, and that signal means something only when compared against the signal from a material of known identity and known concentration. That known material is the reference standard, and without one a number is a reading rather than a measurement.
It must be well characterised, stable, and traceable to something outside the laboratory that produced it. Pharmacopoeial standards exist for this reason: they are prepared and certified so that two laboratories on different continents can compare results and mean the same thing. A standard prepared in-house from unverified material inherits whatever was wrong with that material.
For compounds with no established pharmacopoeial standard — which includes most research peptides — a laboratory has to source or prepare one. That choice is a genuine limitation on the comparability of results between labs, and it is rarely stated on a certificate. It is the honest reason two competent laboratories can report different figures on the same vial.
At minimum, which method was used and against what the sample was compared. Reports that name the standard and its source are making themselves checkable. You will usually not be able to verify a standard yourself. What you can do is prefer sets where the same laboratory tested many batches over time, because internal consistency is achievable even where cross-laboratory comparability is not. A long series from one lab tells you about drift; a single report from an unnamed lab tells you very little.
Traceable means there is an unbroken chain of comparisons back to a recognised authority, each step documented. It is the difference between 'this matches our reference' and 'this matches a reference that itself matches an internationally recognised one'. Treat purity figures as internally comparable within one laboratory's series and only loosely comparable across laboratories.
